其它 | Abstract: The first French writers to describe a bullfight (corrida) are petrified by the pain endured by the poor beast agonizing before mad audiences. And yet, with the arrival of the Romantic imagination, it is not the victim, but the executioner, who will come to embody the hero in the mind of European visitors. Theophile Gautier, Prosper Merimee, Edgard Quinet and even Alexandre Dumas praise the glory of the bullfighter and his underlings. This new super-human becomes a recurrent figure in their writings, thus helping to consolidate that universal association between the Spaniard and bullfighting, and marking the unfortunate fate of bulls for centuries to come. |
