There are several reasons for considering a photoelectronic streak-camera tube utilizing a magnetic electron lens. The high limiting spatial resolution of the magnetic lens offers the potential of achieving high technical time resolution. Also, the magnetic lens allows the use of large active diameter planar and mutually parallel photocathode, acceleration mesh and electron target components. The principal design characteristics of a one-loop-focus magnetic streak-tube having electric field deflection plates are described. Operation in uniform and non-uniform magnetic focus fields is discussed. It is shown that maximum deflection sensitivity is achieved for deflection plates situated at the electron beam focus antinode, and that the output trace is then normal to the deflection electric field.
