Abstract Whenever approximate wavefunctions are employed in calculations of electric dipole oscillator strengths ( f values). so that “length” and “velocity” forms ƒ and ƒ differ, an appropriate linear combination of transition moments may yield and f value which is usually close to (and often more accurate than) the better of f L and f V . Sample calculations on the helium isoelectronic sequence and the boron atom demonstrate the effectiveness of the procedure.
