BaMgAl10O17 (BAM) and BAM doped with Eu2+ and Mn2+ were prepared by solid-state reactions starting from BaCO3, Al(OH)3, Mg(OH)2 · 4MgCO3 · 6H2O, Eu2O3 and Mn(CH3COO)2 · 4H2O with LiF as a flux. X-ray powder diffraction data and luminescence spectroscopy were investigated as a function of the Eu2+ and Mn2+ concentrations in BAM. A broad excitation band (color range from UV to violet) has been observed from Eu2+ and Mn2+ co-doped BAM (λem=515 nm). The emission spectra of the co-doped BAM samples show intense blue (450 nm) and green (515 nm) emission peaks (λex=326 nm). And the emission intensities of the blue and green peaks vary with changing the ratio of Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions in BAM. The observed luminescence is assigned to the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ covering blue and green spectrum. The co-doped BAM presents xy CIE chromaticity coordinated related to the blue and green emission. This is an important requirement for phosphor of white light emitting diodes (LEDs) in solid-state lighting technology.
