Placental Site Trophoblastic Tumor in Nonseminomatous Mixed Germ Cell Tumors of the Testis: a Case Report and Review of the Literature

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare form of trophoblastic neoplasm arising from intermediate trophoblastic cells and was first described in women in 1895 as “atypical choriocarcinoma.”1-4 The term “placental site trophoblastic tumor” was coined by Scully and Young in 1981 to underline the malignant potential of this lesion.2 Although PSTT occurs mainly in women of reproductive age, it is also encountered in men as an exceptional entity, recently recognized in the last World Health Organization classification,5 and they are morphologically analogous to their counterparts in the female genital tract.
