As one of the novel electrochemical energy storage devises,sodium-ion battery( SIB) has already attracted worldwide attention. The working principle of sodium-ion batteries is similar to the lithium-ion batteries.SIB has a wide application prospect in large-scale energy utilization because the amount of the sodium element is much more abundant, and the cost is significant lower than those of the lithium element. Nowadays, the studies concentrating on the electrode materials in SIB are prosperous. Furthermore, recent developments in cathode materials for SIB mainly focus on layered transition metal oxides and poly-anionic compounds. Among the various cathodes, the layered transition metal oxide material has better electronic conductivity and more stable layered structure. In this review, the structure and the electrochemical properties of the layered transition metal oxide were discussed. Moreover, this paper predicted the feasibility and the challenges of using the layered oxide materials in SIB,which may provide some suggestions on the studies and the applications of the layered oxide cathode in SIB.
