In view of the current situation that tailing resources have not been utilized effectively, the possibility of using iron tailings as coarse aggregate to SMA in pavement surface is discussed. In this study, the best gradation and the best asphalt content of SMA-13 are determined by material optimization, mix proportion optimization and performance verification. Rutting test, immersion Marshall test, freeze-thaw splitting Test, Schellenberg Binder Drainage test and Cantabro test were used to evaluate the performance of SMA. The results show that when the gradation is 10~15mm iron tailings: 5~10mm iron tailings: 0~5mm machine-made sand: mineral powder = 36:37:16:11, and the optimal asphalt-aggregate ratio is 6.3%, the test results of SMA-13 added iron tailings coarse aggregate can meet the requirements of current asphalt mixture technical specifications, and have good performance.
