摘要
Lignin abundance worldwide is well-known, and the effort of academic research groups and industries to increase the use of this biopolymer in a wide variety of fields has not gone unnoticed. While lignin has been used as an energy source for decades and applied as an additive in cement, adhesives, and dispersants, the development of lignin-based materials for emerging advanced applications has exponentially grown in recent years. This is especially due to its antioxidant, anti-UV, antibacterial properties, and high-carbon content. As the global consumer compels industries to produce green and sustainable products, the use of lignin, as a biobased, biodegradable, and non-toxic raw material is increasing. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the challenges and limitations of these materials and the necessary steps to reach their commercialization. This paper offers a current opinion on new lignin-based materials for emerging advanced applications.
