Efficient biological processes are crucial for minimizing contaminant levels in aquatic environments. We present a systematic review of studies related to emerging contaminants, metabolic modes, and remediation processes associated with the genus Chlorella. Relevant studies published from 2018 to 2023 were included. The potential of Chlorella to remove organic contaminants in water bodies or wastewater in mixotrophic mode, using bioadsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation, has been recognized. Among them, the Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Chlorella vulgaris and several strains of Chlorella sp. Were highlighted as it can removal various organic carbon sources. The review also reveals that phycoremediation technology with the Chlorella genus can effectively remove organic contaminants and has prospects for enhancement since high removal rates are already found with isolated or consortial species and much research can still be conducted to recognize the removal of organic molecules associated with body care products, veterinary drugs, multiple residues, new medications, cleaner products, and others.
