New catalytic reactions by enzyme engineering

Enzyme engineering can now routinely create non-natural enzyme function. These new enzymes catalyze reactions that are ‘new' to biology but known in organic chemistry. Here we highlight how enzyme engineering currently moves beyond a chemomimetic approach to create new (bio)catalysts for important chemical transformations that have largely eluded catalysis.
