Pilgrimage Trails in Japan’s Kii Peninsula

Abstract The Kii Peninsula boasts an exceptional heritage of ancient temples and monasteries. These assets have been opened up to tourism through the development of pilgrimage walking routes, attractive both to religious and cultural tourists. The Kumano Kodo trails link rural communities and small towns (population of 30,000–75,000) that are around 3 hours from major cities and that have few resources apart from small-scale agriculture and tourism.
