Waste dyes produced by industries present a significant environmental challenge requiring effective and sustainable solutions for treatment. This review discusses the potential of polysaccharides, specifically chitosan, and its derivatives, as efficient adsorbents for removing dyes during wastewater treatment. It was observed that polysaccharides possess advantageous properties, including thermal stability, various functional groups for interacting with dyes on a molecular level, and tunable surface characteristics. The review also found the polysaccharides can eliminate a wide range of dyes from wastewater, achieving excellent uptake capacities often exceeding 200 mg/g, while remaining reusable for up to 5 cycles. This study promotes the use of eco-friendly materials for addressing industrial wastewater contamination by utilizing biodegradable adsorbents. The emphasis on chitosan and its derivatives highlights their crucial role in addressing the need for efficient and sustainable removal of dyes from contaminated water in industrial processes.
