According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, data from 2017 to 2020 suggest that the prevalence of obesity in the United States climbed to 41.9%, with higher prevalence among some racial and ethnic groups and those who are socially and economically disadvantaged (1). Obesity is associated with an increased risk for common illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, degenerative joint disease, sleep apnea, and cancer (2).
