AbstractThe ophthalmic formulation of diquafosol tetrasodium (INS365), a P2Y2 receptor agonist, is targeted to treat dry eye disease through rehydration of the ocular surface. Existing pharmacological therapies for dry eye disease are limited, therefore, approval of this medication is anticipated. This review summarises key findings during development and in clinical trials including clinical effectiveness and safety. The relevance of P2Y2 receptor technology to dry eye disease and the disease process is discussed.Keywordsdry eyelacrimal glandmucinP2Y2 receptortearstreatment
