Investigation and Containment of a Multi- Drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Utilizing a Collaborative Multidisciplinary Approach

Active surveillance of microbiologic data by infection control preventionist revealed an increase of multidrug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii from a multiregional area of extended care facilities into our acute care, level one trauma center. This was noted between January and August of 2010. An investigation was launched with the goal of containing the community acquired MDR Acinetobacter and avoiding an incidence of a hospital acquired MDR Acinetobacter.
