Low temperature solid state reactions were used to synthesize (Bi2)m×(Bi2Te3)n phases that consist of ordered superstructures of Bi double layers and Bi2Te3 blocks. Phase analysis using X-ray powder diffraction confirms that the (Bi2)m×(Bi2Te3)n series is infinitely adaptive for BixTe1-x compositions between x = 0.44 and x = 0.70. This implies that infinitesimal changes in composition between these boundaries result in distinct (Bi2)m×(Bi2Te3)n structures. Outside these limits two-phase behavior is observed. The thermoelectric properties of these phases are optimized for the 0.63 ≤ x ≤ 0.70 p-type materials with power factors S2/ρ = 10-15 μW K−2 cm−1.
