A method is presented of determining the ultimate load capacity of steel I-beams containing single rectangular web openings. The analysis is based on stress distributions derived from finite element analyses whose accuracy was verified by means of comparative tests on experimental beams. Use is made of the familiar techniques of plastic analysis and the process is amenable to hand-computation. The accuracy of the analysis is unaffected by variations in the moment-to-shear ratio at the perforated section and no restriction is placed on the size and position of the opening.

Die analise is gebaseer op drukverspreidings, afgelei van 'n eindige-element analise waarvan die akkuraatheid gekontroleer is deur middel van vergelykingstoetse op eksperimentele balke. Die bekende tegnieke van plastiese analise word gebruik en die proses is onderhewig aan handberekeninge. Die noukeurigheid van die analise word nie geaffekteer deur wisselinge in die buigmoment-tot-skuifspanning- verhouding nie en geen beperking word geplaas op die grootte en posisie van die opening nie.
