Suburbs by design

The stereotype of the boring uniform suburb has never been completely accurate as a label. The suburbs have always been locations for greater experimentation by developers, governments, and citizens with regard to the built environment than is commonly recognized. Drawing on the case of greater Melbourne in the State of Victoria, Australia, we discuss isolated examples of experimentation and innovation with regard to the built environment that signal the possibility of a suburban landscape that could be very different from that we have today.
