Are Ulcerative Colitis and Diverticulitis Connected by the Same Hub?

To the Editors, We read with great interest the article by Rahman et al1 on the “Association of Complicated Diverticulitis With Development of de novo IBD”, as well as the accompanying editorial published in the same issue, “IBD Development After Diverticulitis May Hold Clues to IBD Pathogenesis.”2 It was noted by the authors that the literature has little to no data on the role of complicated diverticulitis as a potential predictor of ulcerative colitis. As this is a new association and because the number of patients diagnosed with this association was small—out of the 17 who developed IBD after complicated diverticulitis, 13 had ulcerative colitis—we would like to share a similar case recently seen. A 37-year-old man presenting with acute abdominal pain was admitted to the hospital in 2011.
