Die Ringe sind hier fünf bzw. sechs kondensierte Cyclohexanringe (die Struktur von CB*[6] ist gezeigt). Dank der bemerkenswerten Löslichkeit der neuen CB[n]-Derivate in Wasser und organischen Lösungsmitteln können nicht nur ihre ungewöhnlichen Bindungseigenschaften gegenüber Metall- und organischen Ionen in neutralem Wasser untersucht werden, sondern auch ihre Eignung als ionenselektive Elektroden.
