摘要
This essay contends that Philip Roth’s The Human Stain (2000) employs what Pierre Macherey calls “eloquent silence” as a technique to adumbrate some of the socio-political obstacles to American cosmopolitanism as well as to mark the “tragic flaw” (or hamartia) of the novel’s protagonist.
