Based on the evidence from 'HNMR, it was concluded that peracetic acid is formed during peroxide bleaching of mechanical pulps. The development of the in-situ generated peracetic acid during peroxide bleaching of a TMP pulp was followed with the idometric titration method. The results showed that peracetic acid is rapidly generated and consumed during the course of the reaction. The potential impact of the in-situ generated peracetic acid on the brightness gain during peroxide bleaching is discussed.
