Dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) is a nitrogen rich energetic ionic salt with easy synthesis, low sensitivity and good detonation performance. It has great application and development potential in the field of energetic materials. Understanding the thermal decomposition mechanism of TKX-50 is very necessary for understanding the safety and compatibility of TKX-50 and carrying out research on its performance improvement. This paper summarizes the research advances in thermal decomposition of TKX-50, then combs the thermal decomposition path of TKX-50, and analyzes the changes of thermal decomposition process of TKX-50 under different conditions and in different systems. Finally, we give the prospects of the future research focus, which is useful for improving the detonation performance of TKX-50 and designing new energetic ionic salts.
