This review article acknowledges the contribution of polyimide (PI) binders to energy storage and focuses on the long-term cyclability of PI binders. High-temperature stable PI binders exhibit mechanical and thermal properties superior to other binders and can even accommodate physical stresses. The abundant surface functional groups in the PI macromolecular chains can significantly improve adhesion on active materials via covalent bonds. Because of the limitations of synthesized PI, two routes of PI synthesis were compared, and the advantages and drawbacks of both methods are discussed. Introducing the new functional polar and conducting groups to the PI backbone could enhance the electrochemical performance of the LIBs containing PI binders. Then the applications of PI binders in the electrodes of Li-ion batteries are subsequently discussed, particularly with respect to the Si-based, Si/C-based, and graphite-based anodes; the thermal stability of PI binders with respect to the cathode is also reviewed.
