Tu Youyou's Nobel Prize and the academic evaluation system in China

Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old, female scientist from China, won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of artemisinin, which is used in the treatment of malaria. She was the first Chinese biologist in China to win this international, high-level award. However, she is regarded as a "three nos" professor (a professor with no doctorate, no background of studying abroad, and no membership in any Chinese national academies) and has never won a domestic prize, which means that, to some extent, she is not acknowledged by the mainstream Chinese academic society.1Perlez J Answering an appeal by Mao led Tu Youyou, a Chinese scientist, to a Nobel prize.http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/07/world/asia/tu-youyou-chinese-scientist-nobel-prize.htmlDate: Oct 6, 2015Google Scholar Nowadays, there is a strong demand to change the academic evaluation system in China. As a result, it is believed that Tu deserves better recognition in the scientific community in China and is owed a proper award. Second, the value of knowledge translation is undervalued. Third, the value of traditional Chinese medicine needs to be reassessed. Although the value of traditional Chinese medicine has long been questioned, not only in other countries, but also in China, the research for which Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize belongs to the area of traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, traditional Chinese medicine might be a valuable resource that could be further investigated and used. Even if academic evaluation is difficult, we still need to learn the lessons from Tu's example. First, apart from research papers, funding, and patents, multi-angle appraisals, such as assessment of research findings translation, are essential. Second, people should be individually assessed in different specialties. Finally, a better academic evaluation system might help to promote the development of more influential scientists like Tu.
