The luminescence of ScBO3−Pr3+ is investigated. The emission consists of four spin-allowed transitions and one spin-forbidden transition from the 4f; 5d to the 4f;2 configuration. The Stokes shift is very small (1500cm−1). In YBO3 and LaBO3 this Stokes shift increases to 3000cm−1). These data are compared with those for Ce3+, Sb3+ and Bi3+ in these borates. This yields information on the dependence of the Stokes shift on the lattice. This can be used to make predictions. Here it is applied to glasses.
