Introduction to engineering tribology

Although the word tribology was introduced in 1966, ancient monuments evidenced that the subject itself has been existing since the beginning of humankind. This chapter is introductory to the Principles of Engineering Tribology. After introducing a brief historical background on the subject of tribology in clouding friction, wear, and lubrication, more than 200 of the basic glossary and terms used in the field of tribology are described. Lists of current tribology education courses, research centers, conferences, and publications are summarized and tabulated.
