Biological membranes exhibit highly heterogeneous lipid composition, comprising hundreds or even thousands of different chemical species. How this chemical diversity enables membranes to allow for both structural remodeling and mechanical stability is only partly understood. Here, we study how the composition of complex membranes determines a prime function of membranes, that is, the formation of a barrier to enable compartmentalization among cells and organelles. We performed molecular dynamics simulations of eight complex lipid membranes including the plasma membrane and membranes of various organelles including ER, Golgi, lysosome, and mitochondria.
