摘要
Fiber engineering and materials science are key technologies driving the development of next-generation textile systems. Exciting new opportunities arise at the interfaces—integrated science—between these divergent disciplines. This chapter aims to discuss some special aspects of the technical design of fibers, yarns, and fabrics. The concept of ideal fiber, fibrous mixtures and comparison of the behavior of the most common fibers, i.e., polyester and cotton, are deeply discussed. Separate parts are devoted to the design of yarns and fabrics and the prediction of their selected properties. The characteristics of clothing assuring physiological comfort are discussed. A new physiological Index of Comfort IC as a balanced, complex combination of properties of selected fabrics is described. These aspects are important for all kinds of design and the usefulness of final products.
