Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) based on silicon process provide a hardware security primitive using the complex physical characteristics of integrated circuits (ICs). This paper describes the concept of PUFs using memristors for random number generation and explains how to implement four types of PUFs that use the analog or digital characteristics of the memristor. Among the four types of PUF, the pulsewidth-based memristive-PUF (pm-PUF) uses analog switching devices, while the Selected Bit-line Current PUF (SBC-PUF), the Total Bit-line Current PUF (TBC-PUF) and the Multi-Array PUF (MA-PUF) use digital switching devices. Various memristor-based PUFs are expected to be promising candidates for PUF hardware security devices.
