Photocatalysis harnesses solar energy using semiconductors to produce clean energy and degrade pollutants, addressing energy scarcity and environmental pollution. Key challenges include stability, aggregation, selectivity, and efficiency of photocatalysts. Researchers are integrating biomimicry to enhance system performance by improving stability, creating new reactive sites, and optimizing light capture and mass transfer. The review looks at bioinspired photocatalysts and systems, detailing their concepts, compositions, manufacturing, and efficacy, with a unique emphasis on bionic mass transfer. It offers a holistic evaluation of the field and discusses future challenges, providing a valuable resource for advancing high-performance bioinspired photocatalytic systems.
