The main obstacle is the fact that the interaction of the sounding cone with the contacting soil has both a local and a long distance influence on the machanical behaviour of the cone. The axisymmetric problem of a cone-pointed rod driven into a continuous body refers both to the penetrometer and the driven pile. A closely related problem is that of a projectile shot into ground. Since the subject of this discussion is the dynamic type of sounding device, an analysis should be looked for which implements the acceleration forces in the mathematical model. The results were compared to experimental data and a good agreement was found with the deceleration data whilst the penetration depth as predicted by the theory was only 44% of the measured one. The first aspect is included in a recent analysis done by Chow who investigated the dynamic behaviour of driven piles subjected to low frequency wave loading, and impact loading.
