Adjacent Segment Degeneration Versus Disease After Lumbar Spine Fusion for Degenerative Pathology: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of the Literature

Arthrodesis remains a common intervention for the surgical treatment of degenerative spinal disease. Clinical studies have demonstrated variability in the rates of adjacent segment pathology after lumbar fusion. A systematic review of the literature on adjacent segment degeneration (ASDeg) and adjacent segment diseases (ASDis) with meta-analysis may provide useful insight into prevalence of the conditions, risk factors for occurrence, and the clinical need for alternatives to fusion.
