Imagination alone limits the potential for electrophysiology-based therapies and many more disease indications already are on the horizon. The need will therefore grow for an understanding of the fundamental principles of electrophysiology, both in terms of exercising operative control (recording, for example) and effecting therapies (stimulation, for example). Though certain fundamental elements of specific techniques may vary, all methods discussed herein entail operations performed at spatial and temporal resolutions that are generally unavailable with pharmacological methods. This holds true regardless of the methods employed for recording or eliciting electrical activity in neurons.
