Abstract We theoretically and numerically study the absorption effect of a metamaterial absorber in the terahertz region.An equivalent circuit model is proposed to estimate the absorption characteristics of the metamaterial structures for terahertz wave normally incident on the structure. Theoretical and experimental results show that the absorber has nearly perfect absorption bandwidth of 53.3 GHz and an absorption peak (0.992) at the frequency of 0.734 THz. The good agreement between the measurement results and simulated prediction is observed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
