He is the author of Desire and Love in Henry James (1989; reissued 2009), and editor of Henry James's New York Edition: The Construction of Authorship (1995), Henry James in Context (2010), and (with Pamela Matthews) Aesthetic Subjects (2003). He is currently completing a book-length study of James in the 1890s, and is editing Roderick Hudson for the Cambridge University Press Complete Fiction of Henry James. His recent work on Eudora Welty has appeared in Mississippi Quarterly, Modern Fiction Studies, and the volume Eudora Welty, Whiteness, and Race.
