摘要
There is a growing recognition that the medical and economic problems caused by envenoming or poisoning by animal toxins are a significant global health issue. Current research has documented the invasion of urban areas in parts of Africa and South America by highly venomous species, apparently displacing less venomous species, with the likely consequence of increasing the severity and numbers of cases of envenomed humans. The development of new, safer and more efficacious antivenoms, combined with a greater understanding of the pharmacodynamics of envenoming, offer the prospect of improved clinical outcomes. However, issues of availability of antivenom and inadequate training in the management of envenoming continue to hinder the implementation of improved therapies in many areas.
