Objective To evaluate the effects of glutamine (Gln) on hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Methods Fourteen SAP patients were randomly divided into Gln group and control group. The Gln group was given Gln 20g/d. All patients were placed with Swan-Ganz catheter and their hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism indicators, including heart rate, mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure, mean pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure,cardiac output (CO), systemic vascular resistance, pulmonary vascular resistance, oxygen delivery, oxygen consumption, and oxygen extraction ratio (O_ 2 ER), were observed. Results In the Gln group, CO decreased, the vessel resistance and O_ 2 ER increased. Conclusion Gln can ameliorate the cardiovascular stress reaction and increase the O_ 2 ER in SAP patients.
