摘要
The pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 highlighted the necessity to be prepared for the emergence of viruses. A recent study1 evaluated the risk of new wildlife-origin viruses in terms of their zoonotic spillover and spread. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) ranked sixth in their results. HEV is the main cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide.1 The virus has two distinct epidemiologies and pathophysiologies according to its genotype.2 HEV genotypes 1 and 2 are waterborne infections found more commonly in low-income countries, causing large outbreaks, and are associated with severe diseases in pregnant women.
