Cognitive impairment after stroke

Abstract This chapter explores cognitive impairment after stroke. Cognition comprises memory, orientation, reasoning, communication, and other thinking functions. Cognitive impairment is seen in many neurological disorders, so healthcare professionals managing stroke patients should be confident in assessing, diagnosing, and managing cognitive impairment. The chapter describes different causes including delirium, and vascular dementia, and also describes specific neurological deficits like aphasia, apraxia, and executive dysfunction. Management is predominantly supportive and functional. Close family involvement and individualization are needed to treat people with delirium and dementia.
