How filial piety affects Chinese college students' social networking addiction——A chain-mediated effect analysis

Studies have shown that the negative fear of missing out can affect college students' problematic social network use. However, existing studies have not fully examined the cognitive and emotional mechanisms of filial piety's influence on online social addiction. To address this gap, this study explores the relationship between dual filial piety and social networking addiction and examines the mediating roles of maladaptive cognition and the fear of missing out. The dual filial piety scale, social networking addiction tendency scale, Wang's Chinese social networking addiction scale, fear of missing out scale, and Davis online cognitive scale were used to survey 1048 Chinese college students. The results indicate that maladaptive cognition and the fear of missing out created both independent and continuous mediating roles between dual filial piety and social networking addiction. The findings may provide a theoretical basis for explaining the causes of social networking addiction and for developing educational interventions.
