Abstract 1. The confirmation of tert-C4H9OSO3H, which has been assumed as the intermediate compound in the hydration and polymerisation of isobutylene with sulphuric acid, has been attempted in the form of sodium or barium salts though with negative results. 2. The reaction mechanism of the hydration reaction of isobutylene with sulphuric acid has been discussed. Experimental results can be explained by the assumption that tert-C4H9OSO3H formed is very reactive to undergo rapid hydrolysis to establish the following equilibrium rapidly.
