Lignin condensation, an unsolved mystery

Lignin valorization has been recognized as an obstacle to profitable lignocellulosic biorefineries. Understanding the structures of condensed lignins is essential to develop value-added products from them. Here, we discuss the mechanisms of lignin condensation that have been proposed and validated in recent years.
