Tight Focusing of Light Beams: Effect of Polarization, Phase, and Coherence

We review a relatively recent development in the field of tight focusing, namely, the focusing of beams with a high numerical aperture objective. Particular attention is paid to characteristics near focus formed by beams with phase, and polarization modulations. Tight focusing properties of partially coherent beam and ultrashort laser pulse are also discussed.
