摘要
This chapter explores the ecological similarities and differences in giant pandas among the Qinling, Minshan, Qionglai, Xiangling, and Liangshan mountains in terms of their habitat requirements, diet, reproduction, population and genetic status, seasonal movements, and predation threats. The southernmost distribution of giant pandas in China today occurs in the Liangshan range. A report from one of the Panda 2000 panels presents an overview of past efforts of protecting and restoring habitats (including the Third National Survey), and recommends actions to identify habitats and ascertain panda distribution. It is noted that, although the spatial analyses described are a highly cost-effective planning tool, decision makers need more thorough natural history data on giant pandas to fine-tune conservation approaches. Additionally, a brief report shows the feasibility of routine mtDNA amplification by using DNA extracted from fecal samples. It appears that different PBS preparation methods do not affect DNA yields from fecal samples.
