This article reviews the state of the art in the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass using protic ionic liquids, specifically with the ionoSolv process. Advantages, working mechanisms, and routes of valorisation regarding the different biomass components of ionoSolv are described, as well as its role in the future production of bioenergy, platform chemicals, and materials.
