Recent advancements in microplastics treatments: Characteristics, occurrence, and removal technologies

Pollution from microplastics (MPs) is a serious problem for the environment that becomes worse every year. There have been warnings about the extensive dissemination and the harm it could do to the environment and human health. MPs in drinking water raise public health concerns when people consume them through drinking water systems, even though their potential effects on people are not yet fully recognized. Therefore, the goal of this review is to present the basic information about MPs in water bodies was presented and discussed, including its properties, emission sources, and effects on human health and the ecosystem. The potential difficulties of eliminating MPs from drinking water were also discussed. The review also highlighted the need for further research.
