This study discusses oxy-fuel combustion of low-calorific value syngases derived from Turkish coal. The effect of burner characteristics on combustion behaviours of the low-calorific value syngases due to high flame temperature arising from combustion with pure oxygen has also been investigated in the present work. This challenge has been overcome through burner modification and generation. Specifically, the oxidizer inlet section of the burner has been reduced by approximately four times in order to be more suitable for combustion utilizing pure oxygen. This modification prevents the burner wall from overheating and provides a more stable flame for combustion of low-calorific value syngases under oxy-fuel combustion conditions. Through numerical modelling, it has been revealed that the predicted temperature distribution for oxy-fuel combustion of the low-calorific value syngases has become more uniform due to increment of velocities of these gases. It has also been determined that the new burner has slightly affected NOX and CO2 emission profiles.
