Lead halide perovskite semiconductors first gained prominence in photovoltaic technology, where they demonstrated impressive photon-to-electron conversion efficiencies in solution-processed devices. The benefits of perovskites are, however, more vividly expressed in light-emitting applications. This new class of halide semiconductors displays intense fluorescence, and possesses narrow emission line-width that could be easily tuned across the entire visible spectrum. These qualities allow excellent color reproduction that matches or exceeds the best commercial display devices. Here, we provide a brief review on the history and the new developments in perovskite light-emission and highlight some of the opportunities and challenges in this fledging technology.
