摘要
Lunar exploration and the subsequent building of a lunar base is the next big step in exploring the solar system. The threat of hypervelocity impact (HVI) from various objects in cislunar space and on the lunar surface is heightened by the almost non-existent lunar atmosphere and therefore must be addressed when considering any lunar system or structure. This paper serves as an update on the risk of micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) impact on the lunar surface as provided in earlier studies with additional information on the MMOD impact risk in cis-lunar space. This paper provides an overview of the lunar meteoroid and micrometeoroid environment from analyzing recent studies on the topic. It also presents an overview of HVIs and some mitigation and preventative solutions for lunar missions. Finally, the paper concludes with comments from a Canadian perspective as well as recommendations for further research into this subject.
